Foiling Revolution Series – Part 1: Navier’s N30 Pioneer Edition Pushes Electric Boating into a New Era

Foiling boats are having a moment in 2025, moving from niche racing tech into real-world recreational and commercial use. Artemis is showcasing its boat internationally, while Navier’s electric foiling designs are drawing attention for their quiet ride, long range, and aerospace-inspired control systems. Designer Paul Bieker is also advancing next-generation foil applications, including work on Kitsap County’s future ferries.

In this multi-part series, we explore how foiling is becoming mainstream starting with Navier’s N30 Pioneer Edition, a dayboat that reflects where high-performance electric boating is headed.

Navier is pushing electric recreational boating forward with the N30 Pioneer Edition, a 30-foot hydrofoiling dayboat engineered for extended range, high performance, and near-silent operation. With more than 75 nautical miles of range at a cruising speed of 20 knots and a top speed of 30 knots, the N30 Pioneer Edition is positioned by the company as the longest-range electric vessel of its kind.

The original concept grew from a question posed by Navier founder and CEO Sampriti Bhattacharyya, Ph.D. “Why don’t we have boats at scale that are, like, Uber on the water?” Bhattacharyya told Business Insider. She argues that if marine vessels can match the cost, speed, and convenience of land or air transportation, water-based mobility networks could become viable. Navier was founded to pursue that vision.

Validating the Vision: Navier’s Water Taxi and Commuter Test Programs

In April 2024, Navier launched a test commuter service for financial services company Stripe, using the N30 Shuttle to move employees between Larkspur and Stripe’s South San Francisco headquarters. Navier has framed the program as a case study in zero-emission commuter transit; as of late 2025, the company has not publicly disclosed whether the pilot program has been expanded or continued beyond its initial run.

Navier’s hydrofoiling water taxi trials demonstrated that quiet, wake-free electric transit vessels could operate reliably. According to Forbes, the test program represents one of the first practical deployments of electric hydrofoils for urban transportation.

Extended Electric Range Without Compromise

Electric boats have traditionally required tradeoffs in range and utility. Navier designed the N30 Pioneer Edition to break that pattern. Its standard configuration includes:

  • Range: 75 nm
  • Cruising speed: 20 knots
  • Top speed: 30 knots
  • Takeoff speed: 16 knots
  • Motors: 2×90 kW
  • Battery capacity: 84 kWh or 114 kWh
  • Charging: Shore power and DC fast charging

On the water, the N30 Pioneer Edition can foil for three to four hours on a full charge, which Navier says is easily enough for a full day of typical recreational boating.

The vessel measures 30’ in length with an 8’ 6” beam. Draft ranges from 1’6” to 6’, depending on foil position. The boat carries up to nine passengers, depending on configuration.

Hydrofoil Architecture: How the N30 Pioneer Edition Achieves Its Ride Quality

A defining feature of the N30 Pioneer Edition is its three actively controlled hydrofoils, which lift the hull above the water’s surface at speed. The foils work like airplane wings, generating lift as water flows over them. At low speeds, the vessel behaves like a conventional displacement boat.

Once on foil, the hull rises above wave action, allowing the boat to skim over the surface rather than push through it. Navier said this results in a smooth, controlled ride regardless of sea state.

The N30 Pioneer Edition uses a canard foil configuration, meaning the front foil  controls pitch and height. The two rear foils  control steering.

Each foil includes an aileron-style flap that is actively adjusted by Navier’s proprietary flight control system. A continuous sensor suite feeds real-time data to the system, which updates foil positions 50 times per second  to maintain lift, stability, and efficiency.

Low-Impact, High-Comfort Performance

At speed, the N30 Pioneer Edition produces virtually no wake or engine noise, reducing disturbance to marine life and shorelines. Without exhaust or fumes, riders experience a quiet, clean passage defined by salt air and sea spray.

Two operational modes give boaters control over their experience. Sport mode enables agile, responsive maneuvering, while comfort mode offers a smooth, gliding ride ideal for cruising, sunset outings, e-foiling, and water skiing.

A Modular Platform Built for Long-Term Adaptation

Navier designed the N30 Pioneer Edition as a modular platform with interchangeable and upgradable components. The structure allows the vessel to evolve with emerging technologies and adapt to different recreational or utility applications.

Leadership Rooted in Aerospace, Autonomy, and Naval Architecture

Navier was founded in January 2021 by Sampriti Bhattacharyya, who holds a Ph.D. from MIT, to build zero-emission marine vessels with low operational costs. Bhattacharyya previously worked with NASA, Fermilab, and the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research; her earlier venture, Hydroswarm, advanced robotics, AI, and underwater drone technologies.

The company’s technical leadership includes:

Paul Bieker, Lead Naval Architect, who has more than 35 years of experience in high-performance composite craft. His early hydrofoil experimentation and International 14 skiff work led to a long America’s Cup career, including serving as primary structural designer for Oracle Team USA in the 31st–35th campaigns and consulting for Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli in the 37th.

Kenny Jensen, Ph.D., CTO, who holds degrees from MIT and UC Berkeley. His prior work includes leading flight controls for a 2-ton, 26-meter autonomous drone at Makani (Google[X]/ARPA-E), developing safety-critical autonomous trucking systems at Uber ATG, and heading flight controls for the Heaviside e-VTOL aircraft at Kittyhawk. At Navier, he now leads the development of autonomous, electric hydrofoiling vessels.

A Vision for Clean, Efficient Marine Mobility

Navier characterizes the N30 Pioneer Edition as America’s first electric hydrofoiling boat and the world’s longest-range electric vessel, operating at 10 times the efficiency of gas-powered boats. The company promotes both recreational and commercial use cases as the foundation of a broader transition to zero-emission marine mobility.

Ultimately, Navier points toward a foiling future where electric craft serve both serious boaters and emerging commercial opportunities. For now, the N30 Pioneer Edition stands as a compelling example of where high-performance electric boating is headed.
