New FLIR Ocean Scout Pro Handheld Thermal Camera

Known for their marine thermal-imaging systems, FLIR just introduced a new handheld device: the FLIR Ocean Scout Pro at the Miami Boat Show. This lightweight, handheld monocular fit in my hand, and the zoom and other buttons were easily controlled with my fingertips. Looking around the show floor, thermal images of people and lights were clearly defined. Four different colors helped distinguish details by representing the different temperatures of objects. This quick demonstration made me think how useful this device would be when operating in low visibility onboard my boat.
The new FLIR Ocean Scout Pro uses an advanced 640px x 480px thermal detector, allowing a 500-meter detection range and a 32° field of view. One-touch button control for zoom, mode, brightness, and standby make it simple to operate. A wireless app allows you to save and transfer images. Designed to be rugged, the Ocean Scout Pro is rated for a two-meter drop and has IP67 water resistance. The rechargeable battery lasts for six hours. This compact thermal imaging camera can easily fit in your pocket when on watch or be tethered or mounted near the helm with your binoculars.
The FLIR Ocean Scout Pro is available for $2,395 (USD).
