Sailboat Rescue in Norfolk: Man Saved Amid Rough Waters

Northfolk, VA–A 70-year-old man was rescued from his sailboat in Norfolk’s Willoughby Bay on Sunday morning after the vessel began taking on water.

According to the Norfolk Police Department (NPD), they received a distress call about a boat in trouble, prompting the rapid response of the NPD Marine Unit 3. Upon arrival, officers found the sailboat struggling against rough conditions as water poured in. Despite the challenging weather, Marine Unit 3 safely brought the man aboard their rescue vessel.

At the time of the incident, the National Weather Service had issued a small craft advisory, warning of hazardous conditions for smaller boats. Wind speeds were reported at approximately 32 knots, making the rescue even more critical.

After being brought to safety, Norfolk Fire Rescue treated the man at the scene. While his condition was not available, the quick response of local authorities prevented a more tragic outcome.

This incident serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of the water and the importance of staying aware of weather advisories before setting sail. Fortunately, thanks to the coordinated efforts of Norfolk’s emergency teams, this story had a safe and successful ending.
