TEMO-1000 Electric Outboard wins Newport Award

The French-made TEMO-1000 Electric Outboard that won Best Operational, Maintenance & Safety Product in Newport this year. This small electric outboard engine was selected by a team of industry experts based on the criteria of innovation, value to the customer, safety, and aesthetics.
Judges comments included: “Aesthetically well-designed to be light weight with a two-piece solution that solves the need to carry heavy equipment or be limited to just one battery. It’s a waterproof, robust system that isn’t fussy or finnicky. A user-friendly bracket mount and adjustable shaft length offers a variety of use cases and easy installation.”
While the TEMO-1000 is the larger, more powerful version of its TEMO-450 predecessor it is shaped to be more like a standard outboard. The TEMO-450 has a unique design as it is more like a straight stick with a propeller on the end. Our publisher Arnie Hammerman previously tested that unit and said it performed well but took a little getting used to as it steers differently than a standard tiller steered outboard.
The new TEMO-1000 electric outboard weighs in at 35 pounds total, 13 pounds of which is the internal, removeable battery. The engine comes with a travel bag and is meant to be as conveniently packed and stowed as a duffel bag of gear or a cooler. No external wires or power is required to use it, just a sturdy outboard bracket. A deployable, extendable tiller handle is located at the top which controls the unit and steers like other types of outboards.
The TEMO-1000 is powered by a 1100-Watt motor which according to the manufacturer dishes out around three horsepower of thrust or 60-pounds of static thrust. Practical applications for such an easily transported, self-contained, three-horsepower outboard like this would be tenders or sailboats. The 24” adjustable shaft height qualifies the TEMO-1000 as a long shaft by most standards.
The manufacturer claims up to four hours of cruising on a full charge and half an hour of full throttle, plenty for getting in and out of the marina but not much to cruise with. Fortunately, the internal battery pack is designed to be easily switched with a fully charged battery if required. Having a few fully charged backup batteries is probably a smart move if depending on a TEMO-1000 for longer journeys on the water. The batteries can be charged with 110V, 12V, or 24V with charge times ranging between five and a half to 12 hours.
Bottom line, these sling-over-your shoulder electric outboards seem to be getting more dialed in and powerful over time. We at Best4Boats haven’t had the chance to play with this particular model yet, but we will let you know when we do. For the right application on a tender or small sailboat, the TEMO-1000 could be an ideal low fuss fit that requires no gasoline. You can do your own deep dive on their website here.
